Murray Sutherland Azteca Boxing Club The Azteca Boxing Team members are taught Olympic-style boxing, mental and physical discipline, self-worth and self esteem, sportsmanship and fair play, teamwork and camaraderie, about the importance of getting an education, and having drug-free friends in a drug free environment. Rhe Boxing Team s goals and objectives are to instill in kids those disciplines mentioned above and teach t hem how to apply those qualities to real life. By entering our boxers in out-of-town shows and tournaments, they have the opportunity to see and meet a diverse group of people from different parts of our country. Our after school hours helps in keeping kids off the streets and in an alternative positive activity, thus lessening their chances for a negative encounter with the law. Law enforcement and judicial officials will tell you that "Amateur boxing is an excellent alternative to juvenile delinquency." Our Boxing Team was founded in 1973. Our coaches are all volunteers certified by USA Boxing, Inc., the governing body of amateur boxing in the USA. He started boxing when he was about 13 or 14 years old with the Livonia boxing club. He was the victor in over 100 Amateur fights and a 3-time State Golden Glove champion (1980,81,82). Some of his notable fights include Frank Tate (1984 Olympic Gold Medallist), Kevin The Killer Watts, Lindell Holmes For The U.S.B.A. Title, Gary Ballard (The S. African Champion) in S. Africa, & Charles Brewer (Former World Champion). He has sparred with many famous boxers such as Tommy The "Hit Man" Hearns, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, John The Beast Magambe & Henry Akeewande. After a long and successful career, he retired in 1993. Kenny was a great lightweight southpaw during the 1950's and 1960's. He was just inducted into World Boxing Hall of Fame in Los Angeles on October 17, 2004.
